The directors of ARPL Architects are, Robert Gilliland, Gordon Fleming, and Rebecca Cadie with Stewart Glendinning, Kenneth Handley and Martin Schlechter as associates and Patrick Lorimer as a consultant.
The practice staff currently includes the following:
5 architects
6 architectural assistants
1 administration staff
The diversity of our project types is stimulating and interesting and all staff are encouraged to broaden their architectural knowledge and experience. Design teams are set up in response to the particular needs of each project.
On occasion we have worked in collaboration with other designers and architects, which can provide flexibility of personnel and broaden the base of expertise. Project teams have included specialists such as quantity surveyors, CDM Co-ordinators, landscape architects, interior designers, exhibition designers, space planners, archaeologists, engineers and services consultants.
The directors each have unique skills and contribution to make to the leadership of the practice.
Gordon Fleming trained at the MacIntosh School of Architecture, Glasgow University and worked in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London prior to joining the practice in 1998.
Gordon is accredited in sustainable design as part of the initial scheme developed by the RIAS. He leads the practice in our approach to design, particularly for new buildings, and success has been recognised through various design awards and competition wins. He lectures, and is a part time design tutor at Strathclyde University school of architecture.
His interests have resulted in utilising some innovative technology, and as a practice we ensure each site and building is considered carefully to produce appropriate solutions.
Gordon monitors the practice quality standards, programming and organisation of project design teams.
Rebecca Cadie trained at the MacIntosh School of Architecture, Glasgow University and worked in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sussex and London prior to joining the practice in 1999. She has a particular interest and expertise developed in ecclesiastical buildings and has Advanced level RIAS Conservation Accreditation. She serves on church property committees at national and diocesan level for several denominations. Through her lead several members of the staff have developed expertise in church repair and conservation area assessments for town centre planning.
Rebecca is responsible for managing the practice continued professional development (CPD) programme and mentors our students and trainees.
Robert Gilliland has a technical background gained through his architectural training in practice in Ayrshire. His experience with construction detailing has led development of skills in the practice to ensure we can meet the needs of producing project information from traditional contracts to design and build projects efficiently and effectively. He has developed good relationships with local hospitality, commercial and housing developers.
Robert has business skills and expertise and is the finance director for the practice.
Patrick Lorimer, an original director of the practice, studied architecture at Cambridge University and has worked in South Africa and London prior to establishing the practice in Ayr in 1989. His career has had a focus on traditional construction and conservation and new uses for redundant buildings since the 1970s. He is a member of both the RIAS Building Conservation Accreditation scheme and the Architects Accredited in Building Conservation. His interests and experience have been our historic building work foundation and developing strong links with clients where long term relationships have realised a series of projects. Patrick has been called as an expert witness on a number of occasions, and is a trustee of several historic buildings.
